Tanner Martin, based in Utah, who died this week of colon cancer at the age of 30, said that his five -year battle began with a single symptom.
Martin was diagnosed with the disease, which occurs when the colon cells grow out of control, by 2020 at the age of 25.
While colon cancer is traditionally linked to adults, diagnoses among young people have skyrocketed in recent years.
Oncologists have suggested that the increase in cases of youth and death could be due to obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, western diet, sugar consumption and environmental factors such as air, soil and water pollutants. The exact causes are not yet clear.
Martin’s first symptom was a mild but persistent stomach that began in 2020. He said pain was not weakening, but made him feel bad.
Gastrointestinal medical oncologist Benny Johnson says that 15% of colon cancer patients report abdominal pain, described as an “intermittent feeling”.
Martin then began to experience severe constipation.
Although colon cancer can sometimes be asymptomatic, a change in intestinal habits or feces, as well as rectal hemorrhage or weight loss, are among classic symptoms.
Experts maintain that constipation from time to time is not a matter of concern, but if you are usually regularly, and you have stopped for weeks or months at the same time, this is not normal and it could be a sign that cancer obstructs your bowels.
“If you notice that persistent diarrhea, constipation or change in the shape, size, consistency or frequency of your stool, do not simply erase -as stress or diet occurs,” said Dr. Cedrek McFadden, a colorectal surgeon based in South Carolina and medical adviser of the colorectal cancer alliance.
Also watch the fatigue. A low red blood cell count, known as anemia, is present between 30% and 75% of patients with colorectal cancer and can contribute to the feeling of exhaustion.
Despite the symptoms of Telltale de Martin, his initial blood work was normal and took six months to a specialist in recommending a colonoscopy.
Due to the increase in younger cases, the U.S. Preventive Services Force updated its colorectal cancer screening guidelines by 2021 to reduce the recommended age to start screening from 50 to 45 for medium -risk adults.
When Martin underwent the procedure, doctors discovered that cancer had spread from his colon to the liver. He was given a terminal diagnosis in phase 4.
According to the Washington Post, young people like Martin, who are of North -American Native Descendence, have the highest rate of colorectal cancer of any ethnic and racial group.
Despite his unpleasant prognosis, Martin finished college and found a job, but the fatigue of his treatments and the toll of five surgeries made him impossible.
He began documenting his cancer trip to Tiktok and Instagram, where his candor and optimism made him a viral sensation.
Martin and his wife, Shay, also started the non -profit rebels against cancer.
Martin, who had always dreamed of being a father, made a sperm blow shortly after diagnosis, as infertility is a common side effect of chemotherapy.
In 2024, in view of what seemed to be an effective treatment for Martin, he and Shay decided to start a family. However, by 2025, Martin’s condition had turned worse, extending to his lymph nodes, and was not sure if he would live enough time to get to know his daughter.
He and Shay welcomed Amy Lou on May 15.
Martin on Wednesday announced his timeless pass in a video previously shared by Shay.
He wanted to record a “carefree” video before his death so that Shay could upload it and focus on the penalty.
Martin, who did not have a life insurance, also recorded a separate video in which he shared his dying desire for fans to give his widow and daughter newly born through a collection of Goofundme, “to help replace what would be there.”
“For less than the price of a hot and spicy mcchicken (Tanner’s words … LOL), you can give them a future desired tanner that he could stay,” the page said.
Fund collection has raised more than $ 500,000 so far.
